Beni G
Having been a founding member of the Mixologists, Beni G is causing a storm as an artist in his own right. From DJing to producing, to co-running the U.Ks most exciting new record label, Beni is forging a reputation inside and outside of the studio. Beni draws upon his diverse musical background, and is seen alonside DJ Craze as a pioneer and innovator of fusing hip hop and drum & bass together. This inventive approach, as well as his own unique flair of turntable skills has taken Beni worldwide, having played across the UK and throughout Europe to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, S.Africa, Canada, Thailand, Singapore, China, Taiwan and USA to name but a few.Beni G aka Ben Geffin has been dj'ing for over 13 years, and been into music from a very young age. Having been classically trained on the violin, he then went on to play in various orchestras as well as guitar in various bands in later years. But it all started whilst Beni discovered the acid house and early rave scene that emerged in the UK at end of the 80's early 90's. It was whilst listening to London's original pirate radio stations like Weekend Rush, Pulse and Defection at this time, that Beni fell in love with the dance scene and decided to start buying vinyl and get behind the turntables. After years of going to early raves, mixing breakbeat, hardcore, jungle techno and then jungle music, he found hip hop a little later during the later part of the 90's but it was always scratching that had captured him as well. From being a young Bboy and hearing the glove scratch on "reckless", to local dj's such as mixmaster max, hype and kid-b tear up the cut, he was always scratching whilst mixing in these early years.
Fast forward a few years and The Mixologists started to take shape in 1997 when DJ Go appeared as a guest on Beni G's Hip Hop radio show The Boombox. Despite originating from different musical backgrounds the pair were developing a mutual and eclectic musical taste that in 1999 would see them form their official battle partnership. The pair went on to become twice UK DMC champions, World DMC runner ups, ITF Euro champions and ITF World runner ups, and won 2 Urban Music Awards (Best DJ & Best compilation album).
As well as the Mixologists, Beni has DJ'ed for UK artists like Mark B & Blade, Fallacy and Jenna G. He has also dj'ed alongside artists such as Eminem, Pharoahe Monch, Feeder, Kool Herc, Roy Ayres, Jazzy Jeff, Mark Ronson, Stereo MC's to name a few. Beni also has had featured scratching on numerous artist albums, most recently for UK Grime star Kano on his debut and forthcoming album. Currently Beni is now the DJ and band member for Plan B, one of UK's brightest new stars. He just finished work on a mixtape with him, as well as getting ready for a full UK festival tour in spring/summer 07.
His first record label Ahead of the Game was formed by Beni G and Plus One (Scratch Perverts) in 2006, with the first release a signing, Skibadee's Tika Toc, one the biggest records to emerge from the UK scene last year. It was 1xtra record of the week, gaining rave reviews across the boards including HHC single of the month and played by everyone from Zane Lowe to DJ Skitz. After its massive success, it firmly put the label on the map. The pair also produce together, under the production alias of Jack Beats with the next single release to be the hugely anticipated 'Keep it Ringing' a Jack Beats production.
Beni has certainly not forgotten his roots, but is being recognised as a solo artist in his own right, in the last year having remixed and worked with artists such as Kano, Plan B, Killa Kela and Bugz in the Attic. And of course he is busier than ever on the road smashing up dance floors round the world, playing Broken Beat to Grime, Drum & Bass to Hip Hop and Reggae to Rock, Beni's production is as diverse his taste.
